Sweet & Savory Puff Pastry Appetizers

This recipe is a product of a several left over ingredients that I had in my fridge. For this appetizer i decided to create both a savory and sweet version that could be used as a dessert!

Feta is one of my favorite cheeses, I love its tartness.  When added to Zaatar and olive oil, it creates an interesting, somewhat exotic  and savory flavor.

Zaatar is a Middle Eastern blend of ground thyme and/or ground oregano that is mixed with toasted sesame seeds, and summac.

The Summac bush native to the middle East, produces deep red berries, that are dried ,crushed and used as a versatile spice.  It has a lemony flavor that is used in salads, spinach pies and added to Zaatar.

As I was making this delicious combination I also found Mascarpone the famous Italian cream cheese in the fridge.

I immediately thought why not make a puff pastry dessert,  I had many other ingredients in the pantry like honey, nuts and fig jam. After playing around with the ingredients I came up with the recipe for the dessert version.  I hope you like both of these as much as my family enjoyed them.  They are simple to make and they look so pretty!

Savory Zaatar Appetizers with Feta Cheese & Tomatoes

One sheet of puff pastry, thawed according to the package.

3/4 to 1 cup of crumbled feta cheese

2 tbsp of Zaatar

1/4 c of extra virgin olive oil

1 large tomato, diced small

2 1/2 tbsp of chives or 3 tbsp of green onions, chopped very fine

Start by pre- heating the oven  for the puff pastry according to the package.

Get a glass, biscuit cutter,  that has a diameter of 1 1/2 inches to use as the cutting device and make the puff pastry circles.  Lay the puff pastry circles in a muffin tin and ruffle the edges.  Bake according to the package.  When the pastries begin to puff up, create a small hole in the middle with your finger and then fill it with your desired mixture.

The small pastries will not all be exactly the same. It doesn’t matter!

Mix the Zaatar (you can buy it in  mediterranean  grocery stores), the tomatoes, the EVOO, and onions in a bowl, if you feel the mixture is too thin add one tsp of Zaatar to it.

After taking the pastry out, let it cool then drop 1 tsp of the Zaatar mixture in .  Enjoy this delicate and tasty small bundle.

Note:  This appetizer does not keep well to the next day since the puff pastry will get soggy.

Sweet Puff Pastry Appetizers

Fig, Mascarpone, and Walnut Puff Pastry Bites

3 tbsp of Mascarpone cheese

1 tbsp of honey

2 tbsp of small pieces, toasted walnuts

One sheet of puff pastry, thawed according to the package.

1/4 tsp of fig jam

Mix the first three ingredients together.  Drop a spoonful in the puff pastry.  Then top with the fig jam and enjoy.

It is so delicious!

You can always double the recipes if you are making more then one sheet of puff pastry.
